Happy Valentine's Day!

“We love because he first loved us.”

– 1 John 4:19

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I’ve posted this same verse on Valentine’s Day on my Facebook page for the past few years. It’s one of my favorite verses.

While driving yesterday, I ate a red, heart-shaped lollipop that Lila gave me at church on Sunday. I started to think about Valentine’s Day, hearts and love.

I thought about how the only reason I know how to love, is because God loves me. He created me not with a heart of stone, but with a heart of flesh, capable of feeling love and joy, sadness and pain. He created me to love Him and other people that He put in my life. All that I have and all that I am are amazing blessings of His love. He is love.

No matter where we are in life, whether single or married, we can rest in God’s love! His love is more than enough for our brokenness, our pain and our longings. So often we think that this completeness will be found in a mate, children, a career or material possessions. While those things offer temporary satisfaction, they cannot fill our hearts in the way that Jesus can. I know from personal experience.

No matter where we go, what we do or what sins are in our past, God’s love never leaves us.

In this spirit of love, I thought I’d share some more of my favorite love verses on this Valentine’s Day.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

– John 31:16

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?...No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

– Romans 35, 37-39

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!”

– 1 John 3:1

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.”

– 1 John 3:16

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”

 – 1 John 4:9-12

Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!
