Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? Have you kept on track? Or have you already forgotten the promise that you made to yourself three weeks ago that this would be the year you’d _________________?
Usually I make a few resolutions, or goals, as I prefer to call them. In the past I’ve wanted to read the entire Bible in a year, to be more organized, to follow-through on commitments, to exercise more, etc., etc. Like most people, I start out well, but the busyness of life soon catches up with me. I shortly after find myself throwing my shoes in the closet, instead of putting them in my neatly stacked and labeled bin. I find myself saying that “next week” I’ll get back on track. I don’t know why, but it always seems that I revert to trying to change things at the beginning of the week or the beginning of the month. Most people say they’ll start their diet on Monday, right?
One day I came across this verse, Lamentations 3: 22-23 NKJV:
“Through the Lord’s mercies, we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Did you get that? The Lord’s mercies are new EVERY morning! If the Lord provides us with fresh mercies every day, that means we can begin anew with our goals, no matter the day of the month or year. It doesn’t have to be Monday or even January 1 to set goals, or to get back on track with goals we’ve already set. I can start my diet on Thursday and clean out my closet on February 5th. If I fail on Thursday, I can start again on Friday. My failure will not consume me. It’s never too late to try again. Each day is a new opportunity.
When things get in the way of achieving our goals, the Lord provides us with a fresh chance to start over again, every morning. Isn’t that so comforting, so refreshing? Isn’t that just like our God?
He knows we aren’t perfect, He knows that we’ll stumble every now and again. But that’s why His compassions never fail, that’s why He gives us new mercies every morning. Great is His faithfulness!
Blessings,
