The Best Christmas Gift for Your Spouse

December 6, 2019 By Andrea Fortenberry

6 Dec

You may have already purchased your spouse a Christmas gift. Or maybe you’ve just started thinking about it. Either way, I have a suggestion for all of us that doesn’t cost a lot of money: living a life of love.

We often think about intentionally loving our spouse around Valentine’s Day or our wedding anniversary, but what if we decided to forgo the big purchases and big event-planning and opted to intentionally express love to our spouse on a regular basis? What if we decided to instead love through small acts of kindness and service every day?

A few years ago, my husband and I taught a class for newlywed couples and this topic came up for discussion. The group consensus was that lots of little acts of love add up much more quickly and mean more than something big given occasionally.

Ephesians 4:32-5:2 can be our inspiration:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

Jesus loved all the time. Everywhere He went, people followed Him, wanting just a touch or a glance at Him in action. He gave sacrificially, ultimately giving His life. While He paid this high price, He also gave love away daily. He shared His time, power and presence to the many people who desired it. He lived a life of love all the time.

Let’s do the same. The greatest gift we can give our spouse is to show them love, not just with words, but with action, every single day.

Do you wish you could stop your hectic schedule? D Do you wish you could stop your hectic schedule? Do you need time to refresh but can’t figure out how to make it possible? In this episode, I share how to experience rest and peace during your busy week through practicing Sabbath rest.

Busy moms, rest isn’t lazy or selfish! It’s not a luxury we have to earn. It’s a gift God desires to give us, we can open it and embrace it often.

Do you currently practice Sabbath? What prevents you from making rest part of your weekly rhythms?
Being a mom is the most amazing and the most tirin Being a mom is the most amazing and the most tiring thing I’ve ever done.

In the early years, it was physically tiring. Sleep deprivation and constantly lifting car seats, diaper bags and play pens, while holding a 20-pound baby on your hip makes for an exhausted mama.

During the toddler and preschool years, it’s a combo of both physical and mental tiredness. Answering what feels like a million questions, arguing with a strong-willed child, and potty training leaves a mom spent.

Now, in the middle years, I’m tired from driving my kids to all their activities. Remembering details like lunch money, picture day, and practice schedules is a lot of mental work. My kids are staying up later and I’m finding that I’m ready to go to bed before they are. 😆

What’s a busy mom to do? Get some rest!

Take a nap when your kids are napping, no guilt allowed! Get a babysitter so that you can have an afternoon of quiet. Eat on paper plates sometimes so meal clean up is a breeze.

Rested moms are happier moms.

I’ll be sharing all about rest on this Wednesday’s episode of The Perfectionist’s Guide to Mothering, so stay tuned!

What is your favorite way to rest?

I love me a Sunday afternoon nap!

It’s sort of like the book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Sometimes I start working on something and then I’m way off course doing something else. I sometimes forget what I initially meant to do. 😆

One of the things I’ve learned that helps me stay on track is to set digital reminders. When I throw a load of laundry in, I set a timer on my phone or watch so that I’ll come back to switch it out. Same for when I switch the load to the dryer so that I can hang the clothes up and fold them while they’re warm and not as wrinkled.

I use the reminders app on my phone to help me remember to give my dog her heart worm prevention medicine once a month, to remind me to tell my son to grab his art supplies on art day, and to discipline a child after school because I just might forget. 😬

While I’m out and about, I use Siri to set reminders for me, like calling someone back or replying to an email. It’s so helpful!

Once you set it, you can forget about it until the reminder tells you it’s time to give it attention. It frees up brain power so you can focus and stay on track.

What digital tips or tricks do you use to help you stay focused or not forget something important?
It’s #favoritethingsfriday! 💗 This week I wa It’s #favoritethingsfriday! 💗

This week I wanted to share about my love for the handwritten note. It’s something so simple, yet so meaningful.

What can take us just a few moments can encourage others for the long-term. Isn’t that so cool?!

Today I took about 15 minutes to write cards for five people I wanted to encourage. It took me three minutes to walk to the mailbox. A card and a stamp don’t require a lot of money. The cost was small, but I pray the impact will be huge.

As we bless others, it eventually comes back to us. Our family had three handwritten cards in our mailbox. It always makes my day to receive happy mail along with junk and bills! 🤗

I’d love to know: what’s a favorite thing on your list this week?

This morning a dear friend texted me, “Checking This morning a dear friend texted me, “Checking in. Are you okay?”

I realized I hadn’t responded to her text from January 30th. 🤪 How have so many days passed since then?

I was so grateful for her message, that she took time to pursue me and our friendship.

Although we have our families to keep us company, we need female friends. They fill a special role in our lives that our husband and kids just can’t.

Yes, we are busy women with a lot to do, but it’s so important for us to spend time with our friends.

I’m super excited about this Wednesday’s episode of The Perfectionist’s Guide to Mothering where I’m chatting with my new friend and MOPS teammate @staceymorgan2000 all about friendship! Be sure to subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts so you don’t miss it.

Don’t know about you, but I previously had a love-hate relationship with bedtime. I’d do our whole routine, tuck my kids in and inevitably one or both of them would start making requests:
“Mom, one more story!”
“Mom, I’m thirsty!”
“Can you sing me a song?”
All I wanted was to close the door and be done for the day!
— —
But then I heard JJ at our women’s retreat a few years ago and downloaded her album “I Dream of You.” I picked a song and would play it when tucking Lila in. It was a game changer! Instead of wanting to rush out the door, I’d tear up at the lyrics and started to cherish bedtime more and more because it was precious time with her.

I started the routine with William too. Almost every night I am a puddle of tears, praising God for the privilege of being the mom to these two precious kids. Don’t get me wrong, there are still days when I’m ready to be off duty, but these beautiful songs slow me down and help me to linger with my kids a little longer. We have precious conversations and snuggles that I’d probably miss out on if we hadn’t started this routine.

So go download this amazing music, all three volumes!

Lila and I got to meet JJ and Dave in 2017 @cswomen’s Christmas concert. So fun!
