Okay, time for a confession.
I recently joined an online shopping site, Zulilly, and have enjoyed perusing the great deals. The way it works is that you sign up for free and you get a daily e-mail with their deals/shopping events. Each event only lasts two days, so you have to act fast to take advantage of the great prices.
Two weeks ago I got a preview e-mail that Ugg boots would be on sale starting the next day at 6 AM. I’ve been wanting a pair, so I definitely planned to check it out.
I usually set my alarm for 6 AM and so often find it hard to get up right then. I usually lie in bed for a few minutes and get up by 6:30 at the latest. But, this usually means that my quiet time with the Lord is rushed, as children wake up and the demands of the day begin.
But, the morning of the Ugg sale, I bounced out of bed a few minutes before my alarm went off and was on the website before 6 AM.
I browsed for a while, but sadly, didn’t end up buying any boots because they weren’t exactly what I wanted and were still more than I had to spend at the moment.
Then it occurred to me: why had it been easier for me to jump out of bed for some Ugg boots than it is for me to get up and spend quiet time with God when my alarm goes off?
Ugg . . . that was convicting!
I hate that it’s so easy, so natural for me to choose my own desires over spending time with God. I say that I want to spend time with God, but am I living that out daily? Am I willing to sacrifice some comfort or sleep to make that possible?
Since the day of the Ugg sale, I’ve asked myself those questions every morning when I wake up. And I’ve made some imperfect progress.
I read this verse recently and was encouraged. I hope you are too.
“The Lord gives me the right words to encourage the weary. Each morning he awakens me eager to learn his teaching; he made me willing to listen and not rebel or run away.” – Isaiah 50:4 (Contemporary English Version)
That’s my prayer: that He helps me to be willing to listen and not rebel or run away, which is sometimes hard for this night owl girl to do in the morning.
Care to join me? I’d love to say a prayer for you to be victorious in your quiet time with God. Would you do the same for me?
